ANNE GANNON is an entrepreneur at heart. She founded The Largo Group in 2016 because of her belief that accounting needs to be done differently. Rather than an accounting firm with a hands-off approach, she structured The Largo Group to take an active role with businesses through a monthly accounting system. They first found the way into restaurants, because it’s an industry that has so many variables and is the hardest accounting job. Over the past ten years, Anne has worked with over 500 companies all over the United States -ranging in revenue from $5 to $50 million. There are very few people that know more about small businesses than Anne, simply because she has spent a decade on weekly calls with owners around the country. She hears their frustrations, understands their pain points, and helps them navigate challenges while planning for the expansion phase of the business.

we doing? Oh, great. Thank you so much for having me. I’m really excited to be here. Absolutely. If our

Brett:

listeners get to know for the first time, would you give us a little bit more about your story and your current focus?

Anne:

Yes. So I’m CPA by trade. Actually grew up. We talked a little bit, you know, South Florida, high school, college. I played professional golf, so my first goal was actually to be a professional golfer. That quickly realized I’m very risk averse, and so playing for money was like not that much fun. So very quickly pivoted and realized that, you know, I do love business. What I loved about the golf journey is I met a lot of entrepreneurs, people who are passionate about what they did, the business owner at all different levels, you know, right, very wealthy and, you know, startup. And so when I went back for accounting and ended up in, you know, big four accounting firm in downtown Boston, because my husband had gotten a job in Boston, so we moved there, I realized that my journey was so different from most accountants, right? Most accountants sort of came up the ranks through, you know, doing internships. And I’ve always lived, you know, in the world of being, you know, a service provider to a business owner, where, you know, my background, I had, you know, stayed at these people’s houses, like, I just had a much more understanding of what the entrepreneur is, and, you know, the good and the bad of that. And so I quickly realized that, you know, it was great to learn from the Big Four, but that wasn’t, you know, where I was destined to be. So I started, I went out on my own at the same time having, you know, my two children, and sort of built the Largo group, which was that whole idea of we are, you know, flat fee we are. We want to be a resource throughout the year, we want to be in your corner. We don’t just want to be sitting on the other side of the desk and lecturing you on what you need to do differently. We actually want to help you get better. And so both large and small, you know, investors really resonated with that. And, you know, we were sort of, kind of going along our way and then really finding a niche in hospitality, just because, you know, I had come from the golf background. I understood hospitality. I had worked in restaurants, so I naturally felt like I could speak their language a lot more than, you know, most accountants. And then all of a sudden, COVID happened. And COVID really resonated with me, because the other part of my background was my dad was an entrepreneur, and his business failed, and it just changed the course of our family. It changed the course of our financial picture. And so all of a sudden, in March 2020 I’m looking at 90% of my client base has a failing business, and nobody knows if they’re gonna get out of this. And very quickly, I was like, You know what? I’m not sitting on the sidelines, like, Yes, I’m just their accountant, or yes, I’m just their, you know, tax advisor. But this is real to me, like I am not going to watch this happen. And so we pivoted. We did, you know, weekly webinars. We transferred our whole model to a weekly approach. Because what does it matter if you’re waiting 30 days to look how your business is doing in the middle of COVID, when you have no sales and you don’t know if you need to lay people off and and it was a very real time, but it really was one of those opportunities to say we can do better as an organization. And so

About Anne Gannon

As the founder of The Largo Group, I have always been told that I am not your typical accountant. And at first I took offense. Trying to figure out what I could do to become a typical accountant?

But then I realized that it is my story that has enabled us to create The Largo Group, which offers a unique approach to accounting that works for the business owner, not just the accountant.

Many of you may not know this, but I grew up playing competitive golf. When I was in high school my parents would send me off every summer to different golf tournaments. We didn’t have a lot of money, so these trips were an incredible sacrifice for our family and one that I would go on alone.

As I look back, I believe these experiences taught me two incredible life lessons:

  1. The pursuit of a dream is incredibly important.  While your dream may not be professional golf, it is my hope that our company can be your set of believing eyes.  To share with you our knowledge to get you to the next level.
  2. The hospitality industry can change lives – the people who welcomed me on these journeys were the members of the hospitality industry.  It was the little things like the server who always made sure we placed an order before the kitchen closed.  Or the golf pro who took the time to ask about our round even though he had 100 different things to do.
