Owen

Doing awesome. Brett, thanks for having me. Cool. Who’s Who

Brett

is, Owen. Give us a little bit more about your story and your background and your current

Owen

focus. Awesome. I had a really non traditional upbringing. I was doing professional photography by my early teens, and so I’ve been involved in digital marketing and the related industry since a really young age, even though I’m only 34 but turned 35 I’ve been doing this more than half my life. And so, you know, I had the luxury of never really knowing how things were supposed to be done, and so I just did them in the way that I thought they should be done. And that’s been transformative. And I bring that every day to the to this day, to everything that I do

Brett

awesome. And so more than half your life you’ve been doing this. You love it. You know, we’ll take it to the moment when you knew, like, Okay, I was born for this, or this is what I was meant to do. Or, you know what? What was like the moment? Okay, it’s marketing now, and this is what I’m gonna

Owen

Yeah, I think that probably was one of the very first times I was in a dark room. To be honest with you, when I was 11, I was taught how to do photography in a dark room, doing black and white film emulsion. And I remember just that, that very first time that the photo that I took was resolving in the chemicals was this really transformative experience. And then from there on, it was just I was hooked, this idea of visual storytelling. And then furthermore, visual storytelling impacting business. And regardless of whether I’m working in my agency or working from a consulting perspective, or doing some sort of investing that ethos and that same moment Right, like that idea of this thing that you set out to capture resolving is still true today, and it’s that guiding principle of telling really compelling stories is transcendent across any type of business, any sort of industry, get getting an emotional reaction in somebody who is viewing what you do for the first time. Can sell a million products. It can build a huge business. It can create multi generational wealth, right? It’s that idea that being different and and capturing a story that resonates with people. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, that that’s a relevant thing for anybody to do, yeah,

Brett

thinking about like, going from the dark room to like either awareness or to like to like understanding it, to transformation or just or to to coming alive with with the story. I remember too. I was, it was sixth grade. It was so cool. My teacher was a photographer, and so he had a dark room in the classroom. And we’re like, this is the coolest teacher. Like, everyone wanted to get the sixth grade teacher because all the other teachers didn’t have the dark room. So we would do photography, right? And we’d made it. We made a little mini cameras, and, you know, from scratch, and, you know, did this, did the whole thing, and then bring it into dark room, and then you get to go to go through the whole chemical process and, like, it was awesome, right? So I’m curious, like, what’s the most rewarding thing when it comes to helping companies, I guess, move from the dark room to to, like, you know, storytelling. So if you like this little short clip of the interview I just did. Click over here to watch the full interview, and please don’t forget to subscribe. Thanks so much, everybody.

About Owen Garitty

Owen Garitty founded FPW Media in 2013 for a reason–to dismantle the extrinsic nature of a traditional marketing agency and forge a path for an innovative, fresh, and transformative creative vision. Today, that vision remains with FPW’s three connective divisions: brand, films, and merchandise, which design and implement client services entirely in-house, effectively cutting out the potential for misinterpretation of any client’s message or goals. FPW was founded as an “unagency”–a concept pioneered by Garitty that prioritizes a client-first outlook, meaning clients’ visions come to life organically through unconventional but efficacious processes.

Garitty has had an aptitude for photography since the age of ten when he got his first camera–a Pentax 35mm–and has since amassed over 15  years of photographic experience. He won his first photography award at thirteen, began working professionally at fifteen, and went on to pursue a career in visual storytelling that grew to encompass design, marketing, and creative direction. In a lifelong pursuit of creating compelling visual narratives, Garitty’s passion lies in garnering brand recognition for his clients with impactful visuals and stimulating design. His profound understanding of the millennial zeitgeist makes him an invaluable asset in a new media landscape.

Today, Garitty oversees brand vision and implementation for privately and publicly traded companies. He cultivates ongoing partnerships with a host of companies, ranging in specialty from large-scale manufacturers to apparel, agriculture, and heavy industrial equipment. He remains present and hands-on: clients have his personal cell phone number and can trust that Garitty is carefully guiding the creative direction of their project.

In 2018, Garitty directed the award-winning and critically acclaimed film, Lionhearted, which elevates veterans’ combat stories. The film focuses on the post-war lives of veterans, emphasizing the need for a sustained platform through which they can relay their experiences. The film’s moving visuals, made up of interviews juxtaposed with combat footage, highlight the profound and moving realities of many of our nation’s heroes.

Garitty’s passion for vivid visual storytelling continues to emanate from the page, screen, or billboard–venturing beyond the ordinary and garnering clients the recognition they want by involving viewers in the narrative. As someone who values place and community, Garitty ensures that FPW is regularly involved in projects with local organizations such as nonprofits, government agencies, and educational institutions. When he isn’t at the office, Garitty can be found boxing, enjoying craft coffee, or gardening organic fruits and vegetables.
