Mitch
I’m doing great, man. I’m so excited to be here, hanging out with you. I appreciate it.
Brett
Likewise, grateful to be here with you as well. For our listeners, get to know you for the first time. Would you give us a little bit more about your focus, I mean, your story, and a little bit more about your focus?
Mitch
Yeah, gladly. Thank you. I grew up in Atlanta. I, my first career was in hotel management. I worked for Omni Hotels for seven years, loved it. Loved that company. Went back to school, got an MBA, decided that I wanted to be an owner, not a manager. Actually, at San Diego State, we were talking about San Diego, and then I started working with somebody who was buying and flipping boutique hotels in San Diego, and we did a couple different projects together, and then I got presented with the opportunity to buy my favorite yoga studio, and my wife had been teaching at the studio for a number of years, it was our favorite place to practice, and we did it, was just this huge leap of faith, I left equity in hotels to buy my neighborhood yoga studio, and we did really well, we ended up selling it for five times what we bought it for. Somewhere along the way, I started doing some consulting work and got my foot in the door with Mind Body, which is a big company in the industry for software, and they started paying me to speak and teach and help people be better business owners. And so when we sold our studio, all of my friends and connections started asking me for help with selling theirs, and, and this company just kind of fell into my lap, and I’ve been running with it ever since.
Brett
Amazing, Mitch, this is so cool. I love the niche rhymes with Mitch. What’s your middle name? Just so, in case this is really cool.
Mitch
Now I’m gonna mess it up, because my middle name is Mitchell. It’s actually Thomas Mitchell McGinley. So,
Brett
okay, that’s cool. That’s all good, by the way. Go and learn more about what Mitch is doing, go to boutique fitness broker.com Boutique fitness broker.com Okay, so let’s just dive right in. What’s the number one secret to maximizing value when it comes really to I think businesses has a common language and fundamentals, and so we can apply this to just about any business, I would think. And, of course you can niche down, but we’ll do that later on. But what would you say is the number one secret to maximizing value for the sale of a business?
Mitch
Preparation. If you go into this blind thinking that you know what your business is worth, not having ever explored it, you’re going to be caught off guard by a number of things that are going to have a negative impact on your business, and so a little bit of preparation, it doesn’t take a lot, but knowing a couple of things that you can prep for, starting now, even if you’re not thinking about selling, you know, good exit strategies, just good business strategy, it’s all about minimizing risk, increasing revenue, and EBITDA, but to me, I think the thing that’s most important is understanding why valuations are done the way that they’re done and positioning yourself for the right type of buyer in advance.
Brett
Okay, this is excellent. So, preparation, right, let an ounce of preparation, right, will probably pay pounds of value. So, what are the top three things to prepare for? You mentioned minimizing risk and position yourself, but like, can you get more specific? So, if you like this little, short clip of the interview I just did, click over here to watch the full interview, and please don’t forget to subscribe. Thank. So much everybody.
