Jarrod

I’m doing great, Brett. Thank you very much.

Brett

The coolest last name ever. And getting to know you for the first time, can you give us just a little bit more about your story and your current focus?

Jarrod

Yeah, so you know, an entrepreneur, which is like comes with good and bad. I was about 16years old, and you know, graduated high school early, decided to get into architecture, that was sort of following the family, you know, the family way, if you will, and then I fell in love with this concept of branding, and, and, if you will, like virtual architecture, as opposed to digital architecture. So, so ultimately helping build the internet, sort of one brand at a time, one web connection at a time, one person at a time, and, and, yeah, as you’ve mentioned, we’ve scaled, we’ve got multiple offices, you know, we’re currently serving a lot of the travel and tourism industry. We love the product they sell, which ultimately experiences and memories, and, and, yeah, and I’m still having fun after 22 years of running a business, and I run it with my wife. So, my wife’s a copywriter, and I was a designer by trade, and now, of course, we’re just businesspeople, and our clients are actually our team, is our team members.

Brett
I love it. This is great, and by the way, you’re in Lake Tahoe, which is Reno area. It’s a dear space of mine. Grew up in Sacramento Bay Area, and we would spend lots of lots of summer weeks up there in some in winter too, doing some snowboarding. So that’s great. So love that. So let’s, let’s dive in right into the topic at hand, which is scaling with branding.

Jarrod

Yeah,

Brett

so, so Jared, what’s the number one seeker when it comes to helping companies that have already scaled, let’s say, from a million to a million revenue, but they’re looking to go to three, five, 10 million. What’s the number one secret to helping them to scale up?

Jarrod

Yeah, well, I often talk about, you know, when you are an entrepreneur, you’re really good at identifying where there’s gaps, right, or where there’s demand, and then you know how to fill that demand, and so oftentimes you know those that are hearing you know today’s podcast and as an entrepreneur you’re like oh yeah we sell that we do that even though you don’t and then you sort of figure out how to do it and I think you have to move past that scrappy sort offstage and you got to start to actually put roots in the ground so into your point of brand but also vision and mission of a company oftentimes you know those visions and missions aren’t created at the, at the forefront, because you’re, you don’t really know what you’re doing right at that time, you’re sort of like I said, identifying a demand and you’re selling into it, and then later you realize, okay, actually, we, we’ve got to say no to certain clients, or to certain industries, or to certain services, or experiences, or products that we sell, and we’ve got to say yes to this, and I think having a really, really sort of North Star, true focus, you know, of a brand that’s really succinct, and people can remember you. I think it’s critical to getting you to that next stage.

Brett

I love it. I think about the time when I was naming my business, right? I was like, how do wename my business? I know, is it my name? Is it, is it, is it, is it something in there? Is it, you know, and I can tell me what you think. I came up with capital gains tax solutions, right, and it’sfocused like a laser on helping people who exit will have a capital gains tax problem, so it’scapital gains tax solutions, right. And so that’s that’s been the name of the company, and that’swhat we do. And then within that, we’ll help people, you know, with their different options andfigure out what’s a good thing, but you know, for, you know, for the business or the real estate, whatever they’re exiting, I feel like it’s pretty good. Now, I took this to the podcast, but then Ifigured, well, that’s pretty narrow. Then we launched our Build to Billions podcast, so walk, and that’s kind of, you know, getting a little broader to, you know, but I’m curious, like, when you’re, when you’re strategizing, even just with a name, right? Yeah, or core value, or a vision, what’s some of the wisdom that you found the best companies are doing?

Jarrod

Yeah, well, at first, I love talking about this topic in the terms of really honing in who you want to sell your product, your services, or experiences to, and I think to your point, like you could either be sort of one inch deep and a mile wide or you can be one inch wide and a mile deep, and I. Think you know, nowadays I think it’s really important to specialize, right, and to identify right off the bat who your customers are and who your customers aren’t, and that’s okay, right? A lot of people feel, oh no, everyone’s my customer, but in reality, when you start to do that, you dilute yourself and you become the vanilla, and then you’re nothing to everyone, as opposed to something.
