In this episode of Build It to Billions, Brett Swarts sits down with Dr. Stephie Althouse, founder of The Brilliance Revolution, to explore her remarkable journey from scientist and skeptic to Christian believer and business transformation expert. Growing up in Germany and earning a Ph.D. in chemistry, Stephie approached faith with a scientific mindset—questioning assumptions, researching Christianity, and seeking evidence before ultimately experiencing a transformation that reshaped her understanding of faith, purpose, and life.

Stephie also shares how that same passion for discovery inspired her work helping entrepreneurs uncover the valuable knowledge hidden inside founders and experienced team members. Through her approach to capturing and transferring this “brilliance,” she helps businesses reduce key-person dependency, strengthen succession planning, and build organizations that can scale beyond their founders. It’s a powerful conversation about faith, purpose, transferable knowledge, and building a lasting business legacy.

Hey, I am I am thrilled for our next guest. She is a PhD, and she is out of the great state of Texas, and she is on a mission to help all businesses to grow with deliberate, transferable knowledge to scale. We’re going to be talking about one of her, two of her books actually today. But really, scaling becomes smoother, bottlenecks reduce, excellent execution becomes consistent. Like, how do you go about doing that, and so she works with expert-driven organizations to make critical expertise transferable and complex things simple. That’s going to be the second part of our conversation. The first part actually is going to be her story, her story from becoming from being a skeptic to a believer, becoming a Christian and a scientific background. Her and so what’s bring to the show Stephanie Althouse Stephanie how we doing?

Dr. Stephie

oh, thank you so much for having me, Brett.

Brett

absolutely and so wow what a background you have your PhD talk a little bit about your story of and in your current focus and then we’ll dive into the to the first book

Dr. Stephie

okay cool well and. Germany, grew up in Germany, came over to Knoxville, Tennessee, when I was almost 23. Thought I was going to just study chemistry for nine months and go back with a big adventure in my pocket and ended up staying. Got my PhD in Knoxville and thought I was going to stay in academia. Three years later, decided to go into research and development in so-called industry, whatever that means. That’s like when academics don’t know anything about business. That’s the word they use and make no distinction between any of the different things that that are going on in business, but anyway, so it was that brought me to San Diego. I worked there for eight years and started my own research group. Brought in my own money through the Small Business Innovative Research Program, and very quickly discovered that if you want to make a real difference with your research and innovation, then not only do you need to focus on actually building, you know, widgets for lack of better word that people can actually use, but you also need to learn about business. There was in a lot of small, you know, smaller high-tech companies. There’s hardly anybody around who really knows that, and I saw that gap, and that’s where I really got interested in learning the commercialization aspect of it too, so that I could hopefully bridge that gap between technology, innovation, research, and development on one side, and commercialization, business, and impact on the other. This is

Brett

awesome. This is such what a story. What a background. What was your PhD in, by the way? What did you get it in?

Dr. Stephie

Chemistry. But you might as well call me chameleon because even with you know, we are forced basically by society to pick a subject that we study, and then, okay, you pick chemistry, and then there’s all these subdivisions, and so I actually I have always loved to work at interdisciplinary interfaces. So organometallic was the subject I went into, but then I got really much closer to physics, which I never thought I would, but I did. And yeah,

Brett

you obviously have a really bright, brilliant mind, and you you’ve achieved a lot. And so, right before the show, you started. You said, “Hey, about four years ago, you know, you a big change in your life, right? And so, walk us through that story, your journey of faith from becoming a skeptic to a believer.

Dr. Stephie

Yeah, I didn’t see that coming. But basically, almost exactly four years ago, I was invited to a local church called Valley Creek Church. It’s a non-denominational Christian. Church, and it’s basically spirit-filled, life-giving, and Jesus-focused, and it’s a phenomenal church. But I was invited by a fellow Rotarian, and God had, I think, placed this person, you know, just there.
